Protect Your Private Parts!!!
No, we’re not talking about the TSA doing virtual strip searches of your precious family members. We’re talking of course about winter riding tips so that you and your family can ride longer, in colder weather with more comfort than ever before. So, here are some tips…
1. Stick a glove down your pants like some cross country skiers when it gets “stupid cold” to prevent your meat and two bits from possibly being misplaced to the freezer section at your local grocer. We hear Tom Boonen does this (called “stuffing”) when he rides in super cold weather. (Of course Robert Plant used to do this as well, but that was for other reasons).
2. Wear wind proof tights…we recommend this. You can ride down into the teens with this style tight.
3. Do not wear anything cotton, this especially includes T-shirts.
4. Wear Wool. As we’ve said before, wool is nature’s performance fabric. The fibers are smooth and have no place for bacteria to grow. While the fiber structure allows the material to be wet and also insulate the heat of your body. A wool cap with ear flaps (like the one we carry) or a long sleeve base-layer will do the trick. If additional wind proof protection is required, wear a skull cap or helmet cover that is wind proof.
5. Emergency cold snap…in the event of serious coldness. Grab plastic bags from a grocery store or even trash from the side of the road and put it under your wind breaker over your coldest spots.
6. Wear Layers – start with the wool based base layer, followed by a long sleeve jersey or light wind breaker. Then add the most substantial winter wind breaker jacket you have on the outermost layer. Combining this with lobster gloves, a wool cap with ear flaps, wind proof tights and neoprene boot covers should allow you to comfortably ride in conditions down to 10 degrees F. or less!
